PAPE NATURE PARK GATEWAY
The Pape Nature Park is something of a natural wonder in itself, spanning some 51,000 hectares in the south west region of Latvia. It has become a birdwatching paradise as it sees over 50,000 migratory birds each year, and even reintroduced other wildlife back into nature. Most notably was the reintroduction of wild horses, who had been driven from the area by human agriculture and settlements.
It was required to balanced the creation of an iconic landmark with the properties necessary for day-to-day life at the park, including a ticket booth, visitor accommodation, a terrace for campers, and a playground for the kids. For this competition, the jury focused its attention on each project’s buildability, and how it would carefully consider environmental impact while at the same time working within a limited budget.
A NEW URBANITY BASED ON AN ORGANIZATIONAL MODEL FOCUSED ON THE CONCEPT OF CLOSED-CYCLE ECOSYSTEMS
AGRECO MILANO is a bio-food an urban agriculture hub mainly, but includes a mixed use program to respond to people’s needs and guaranty efficiency of the project.
Currently, the Ortomercato of Milan is one of the largest companies in Europe for the trade of fresh food products. Currently, the buildings in which the agro-food center’s activities are carried out are obsolete and they are struggling to meet the standards of energy-efficiency and of management and organization. Anyway, due to his strategic position in the city’s core, it offers many possibilities for its redevelopment.
The main objective of the project is to give a new life to the neighborhood of the hometown: a closed and isolated area would be transformed into a new polarity for the city of Milan and its hinterland, offering multiple services that also involve citizens. The project of the new Ortomercato, which has been named “AGRECO MILANO” (Energy Efficient Energetic Center for COllaboration and COworking of the city of MILAN), would not only concern the marketing of agricultural food, but include a wide range of activities that respond to the needs of the population. Therefore, great importance has been given to the social sphere, as it represents the factor that can guarantee the success or failure of the project.
The purpose of AGRECO, therefore, is to develop a new urbanity based on an organizational model focused on the concept of “closed loop ecosystem”.
One of the solutions for creating artificial communities that are sustainable for the planet could be the imitation of the cyclical functioning of natural systems.
